The children have been learning about PyeongChang, South Korea. We have done some map work and took a virtual tour of the site where the games are being held. We filled out our train tickets and packed our bags for the trip from Seoul to the Olympic Games. The children are participating in our classroom Olympic Games. We had Bobsled Compound Word Races, Skeleton Math Facts Races and Snowboarding Math too. We will finish our unit after vacation. Stay tuned for the Curling and Downhill Skiing competitions!

The children were very busy during Catholic School Week. They worked with their fifth grade buddies from Mrs.,Reilly"s class and completed a project together highlighting certain parts of the story. Later in the week, the first graders made thank you cards for their buddies.
We did a class science experiment called , "Walking Water." The children learned what capillary action was and observed it in action. They made predictions of what might happen. Then, we waited for the final result. It was part of our Science Showcase. The volleyball game was loads of fun and they loved the popcicles on Student Appreciation Day. The children in grade 1B had an excellent time on their trip to Israel. They packed their bags, did some authentic writing when filling out tickets and passports, learned how to use their map skills so we could travel to some of the places we learned about, had jobs to do, took their cameras with them that they made in Mrs. Putnam's art class and got to go on two tours.
Take a walk by Grade 1B's classroom and you might find the children doing many things: reading independently, playing Tic Tac Toe with their math facts or spelling words, doing a science project, working in their poetry notebooks, writing in their Writers and Readers Notebook, buddy reading, listening to stories on tape or writing a story about a Gingerbread M&M and his adventure!
Grade 1B students helped to construct a chart of math strategies that will help them this year. Our motto is-"Think, Do and Say." Think of what we are doing and what the question is asking, use the strategies and be able to explain how you get your answer. The children work as a whole class, with partners and independently. |
